Complete Educational Program from LearningTech

[Sponsored Review]

For busy parents, sometimes it can be quite challenging to source for suitable learning resources for their children. Recently, I was introduced to the Complete Educational Program from LearningTech, which is a holistic program for children from preschool to primary school.

One interesting feature of the program is Eltee Pen, which is an audio learning device. By tapping the icons, it would "speak" or "sing"! The children were amazed by it!

There are 3 components: Awareness - Time to Learn, Ability - A Time for Math, Attitude - Lifetime Values.

Awareness - Time to Learn
This is a set of encyclopedia with 3 sections, Living World, Explore, as well as Science & Technology. A question is used as a stimulus to trigger the curiosity in the children. In addition to the text, Eltee Pen has extra information, songs and sound effects. There are also suggested investigative activities for the children to carry out hands-on experimentation. This provides an all-rounded learning experience - visual, audio and kinesthetic.

In addition, the Children's Atlas enhances their knowledge in Geography and different cultures. A tap of Eltee Pen on the icon would play the national anthem of the country, so interesting! The children learn new vocabulary using Children's Dictionary. Not too worry if you are not sure how to pronounce certain words, as Eltee Pen would do a great job!

Ability - A Time for Math
Through this multimedia program, the children build a strong foundation in Mathematics in a fun way. The program cover Numbers & Counting, Measurement, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. The concepts are introduced through stories, games and songs using story books, activity books, Eltee Pen and CD-ROMs.

I read the story books with the children, and ask them questions from the books, then they use Eltee Pen to check whether their answers are correct.

My children are particularly interested in playing the board games and the card game, which strength their addition and subtraction concepts.

Attitude - Lifetime Values
It is not meaningful to be the most knowledgeable person who does not have good character. One way to introduce positive values to the children is through storytelling. Through reading with the children or using Eltee Pen, the children learn about moral values like honesty, caring, and sharing. The colourful illustrations are attractive, and the children are engaged through the dramatisation and music from Eltee Pen.

DIY 3D Letters

The children finally have their own bedroom! One consideration of designing a shared children bedroom is to ensure there is private space for each child. In addition to the use of bed sheets that are chosen by the children, another decorative idea is to use letters for them to "mark" their "territories".

Since we have some cardboard at home, we decided to make our own 3D letters.

Materials:
Cardboard
Washi tapes
Scissors
UHU glue

Method:

Step 1:
You may either draw the letter yourself, or use Microsoft Words to print out the letter. Note that the two sides are mirror image of each other. Draw a rectangle of about 3 cm wide in between the two sides.

If you are making letters like C and G, you can make the left side with 3 cm straight.

The base (the trapezium) is optional.

Step 2:
Use UHU glue to secure both left and right ends, so that the letter looks like this from top view.

Step 3:
Use Washi tape to decorate the letter.

Survival Guide to LEGOLAND Malaysia with Preschoolers

Finally we brought our children overseas, not just over the sea to Sentosa! Their first overseas trip is to - LEGOLAND Malaysia!

Ok, please don't laugh at me, I know some of you go to Malaysia as if you are just going downstairs. Even a one-night-staycation was a big deal to me (read my post on Planning Staycation with Young Children), so you can imagine my excitement about bringing them out of Singapore! We are thankful that the children's grandparents came along with us, so that my alert level only needed to increase by 100% instead of 200%.

We booked our tickets and coach online a few days before the trip, but we only told the children about it the night before. That was a smart move, as they kept asking millions of questions the moment we broke the news to them!

Things to Do at LEGOLAND for Preschoolers

Minifigure Swap
Other than the rides, do you know that there is one must-do when you are at LEGOLAND? Yes, bring along some LEGO minifigures to trade with Model Citizens (LEGOLAND employees)! Look for Model Citizens with a tag "Trade with me", and if you are interested in the LEGO minifigure on the tag, just approach him / her!

We traded two of our old minifigures with new ones! The staff were friendly and exchanged with us without a frown or rolled-eyes even though ours were really old!

Ok, now let us share with you about the park rides.

We would suggest families with preschoolers visit LEGO City first (turn right after The Beginning) as it has more activities suitable for preschoolers as compared to LEGO Technic (turn left after The Beginning).

LEGO City - Junior Driving School
Age: 3 - 5 years old only

Pei Pei is overage for this, so Hao Hao went in himself. There was a staff taking photo for the children, but we gave it a miss, as the photo was meant for the "driving licence" which came with a fee.

LEGO City - Driving School
Age: 6 -13 years old only

When I asked Pei Pei who taught her how to drive, she said it was a video. As a novice driver, she found it a bit challenging to step on the accelerator. Or probably the breakfast couldn't supply sufficient energy for her to step on it.

LEGO City - Boating School
Minimum age: 8 years old (1-7 years old must be accompanied by an adult)

Three people (2 adults + 1 child) can be accommodated in a boat. It was just nice for us - Grandparents and Pei Pei in one boat, while DaDi, Hao Hao and me in another boat. Grandparents and Pei Pei were in front of ours at first, but with Hao Hao's speed-boat driving skill, we overtook them!

LEGO City - LEGO City Stage

After sun-tanning for a while, the fully air-conditioned place was much appreciated! The show "When Santa got stuck up in the chimney" was quite entertaining. The "snow" at the end of the performance gave us a pleasant surprise!

LEGO City - LEGOLAND Express
Minimum age: 8 years old (0-7 years old must be accompanied by an adult)

The queue was rather long, we had to wait for two rounds for our turn. We could see Miniland from a distance, without getting melted under the burning sun.

LEGO City - Rescue Academy
Minimum size: 90 cm (90-109 cm must be accompanied by an adult)

Warning - this activity requires a lot of muscle power! Once we got on the rescue vehicle, we had to pump to make it move forward. And when we reached the houses "on fire", we had to pump again to operate the water jet. Since there were not many people in the queue, the children requested to play one more time. You can imagine how tired DaDi and I were after two rounds of pumping. Nevertheless, it was a great bonding activity for the family to build team spirit.

LEGO City - LEGO City Airport
Minimum size: 80 cm (80-119 cm must be accompanied by an adult)

Two people were allowed in a plane, so DaDi partnered with Pei Pei, while I partnered with Hao Hao. Once Hao Hao realised that he could control the up and down motion of the plane, he kept making the plane go up and down until I suffered from motion sickness!

Land of Adventure - Lost Kingdom
Minimum size: 80 cm (80-119 cm must be accompanied by an adult)

On the carriage, we used the laser gun to shoot at the targets. I suspected that my laser gun was faulty, I still couldn't believe that I scored a grand total of... ahem... zero!

Land of Adventure - Pharaoh's Revenge

You may consider wearing a helmet before you go in. The balls flew into my face from all directions. But the children had great fun shooting the balls.

Imagination - DUPLO Playtown

This sheltered playground is suitable for toddlers and preschoolers. The highlight of this playground for the children is DUPLO Express.

Imagination - DUPLO Express
Minimum size: 80 cm (80-99 cm must be accompanied by an adult)

The siblings had a relaxed time on the train ride. Grandparents also could take a break from running after and "eyeballing" the children.

Imagination - Observation Tower
Minimum size: 120 cm (no requirement if accompanied by an adult)

Somehow I was a little scared when we were going upwards. However, the children simply enjoyed the 360-degree view of the park.

Imagination - LEGO Studio
There are four 4D shows at different timings - LEGO Racer, Spellbreaker, Clutch Power, Legends of Chima. We watched LEGO Racer, we could feel the strong wind as the racing cars were accelerating, and got wet in the snow land!

Imagination - Kid Power Towers
Minimum size: 100 cm (100-119 cm must be accompanied by an adult)

Another exercise for the muscles. DaDi and Hao Hao vs Grandpa and Pei Pei, guess which pair reached the top first?

Imagination - Build and Test

Unleash creativity to build the sturdiest building and the fastest racing car, and put them to test. It happened to rain when we were there, but the children's excitement was not dampened at all, and they played for an hour there.

LEGO Kingdoms - Royal Joust
Height: 92 - 150 cm

As it was still raining, the children didn't have a chance to try this. But I thought the children would be thrilled to ride the LEGO horses.

LEGO Technic - LEGO Star Wars Miniland

Someone should not be part of Star Wars? (Santa on the right bottom!)

LEGO Technic - LEGO Academy

Just build anything you like! This reminds me of the Master Builders in LEGO Movie, they can build anything with any LEGO parts!

Miniland

It was such a pity that the rain did not stop, so we didn't have opportunity to have a good look and take photos with the amazing LEGO buildings.

Survival Guide to LEGOLAND Malaysia with Preschoolers

Tips #1:
Visit on weekdays to avoid the crowd. Take note that the weekends in Johor Bahru fall on Friday and Saturday. We visited on a Thursday, the waiting time for each activity was about 5 to 10 minutes.

Tips #2:
We considered driving initially, as we heard that driving to LEGOLAND via Tuas Second Link is very straight forward, just drive along the road and exit at Nusajaya Exit 312. But we eventually took a coach from Singapore Flyer, and it was the right choice because it took shorter time at the checkpoints on the day we went there!

Tips #3:
Bring hat / cap, umbrella / rain coat and sunblock lotion. You may consider bringing extra set of clothes too. We nearly melted under the hot sun. However, when it rained heavily in the afternoon and all outdoor rides stopped operation, I appreciated the hot sun! Ponchos are also available at the shops, I think it is about RM19 each if I remember correctly.

Tips #4:
Take the map at the entrance. This is especially important to locate the washrooms! Take a few copies, just in case your children tear the map when they are fighting on where to go next. You can use it as a fan too!

Tips #5:
Check the waiting time and height & age limit before you join the queue. Don't queue happily for 10 minutes and then realise that your children do not meet the height and age requirement.

Tips #6:
Bring plenty of water, or buy from Mall of Medini (just a few minutes walk from the entrance) before you enter LEGOLAND. Do note that if you are holding day ticket instead of annual pass, it is a single entry, so you cannot go out to buy things from Mall of Medini and then go in again.

Tips #7:
Re-charge yourself and your children with food. We had our lunch at Market Restaurant (at LEGO City). Chicken rice set (with a fruit and a bottle of drink) is RM25, and the Special Roast Chicken set (with soup and a bottle of drink) is RM28. The chicken legs in both dishes are the same, the difference is the former is served is rice, while the later is served with gravy and fries.

Before we left, the children had donuts from The Cafe (at The Beginning), the plain one is RM3, while the chocolate one is RM6.5.

Even if it did not rain, I don't think we can cover everything as we have two seniors and two juniors with us. Hope to visit the rest of LEGOLAND and LEGOLAND Water Park next time!

Big Hero 6 Baymax Bento

We were treated to watch Big Hero 6 last month, the children like Baymax, which gave me an idea to make a simple bento dinner for them.

Making ongiri (rice balls) does not require special tool, you just need to place the rice in a piece of cling wrap to make the shape required. Take note that when you cook the rice, add slightly more water to make the rice sticky, so it can be made into rice ball easily.

For the body of Baymax, there are many ingredients that you can use as fillings, for example, minced meat and bonito flakes.

Pardon the funny decorations on the right, I wanted to make the xiao bai cai umbrella, but I made Baymax too big to stand under it!

Watercress Honey Drink Recipe (西洋菜蜜)

Watercress honey drink (西洋菜蜜) is one of my favourite beverages, because it is sweet and refreshing. I ever bought the concentrated watercress honey syrup from supermarket in Hong Kong before, however, I cannot find this in Singapore. Yes, there are some restaurants in Singapore that offer this beverage, but at S$2+ per cup, I can only afford to order one cup at one time.

Finally, I manage to make watercress honey drink at home! It is actually very easy, and the children love it too!

Ingredients:
200 grams watercress
1 honey date (蜜棗)
1 litre water
Honey / honey rock sugar (石蜂糖) to taste

Method:
  1. Wash watercress, cut into half. Wash honey date.
  2. Put watercress and honey date into boiling water, simmer for 45 minutes.
  3. Add honey or honey rock sugar according to your preference, sieve and then serve either warm or chilled.

What is your favourite beverage?

Pampering the Tired Mum with Soosul

[Sponsored Review + Giveaway]

All parents would understand that sleep can be a luxury. Even when my children are now 5 and 6 years old, my sleep is still being disturbed when they wake up in the middle of the night and wake me up. When they are sick, I can forget about my beauty sleep too, as I have to check on them every now and then.

And you know, lack of sleep is very damaging to our skin. Pigmentation on my cheeks are getting from bad to worse, and the number of fine wrinkles around my eyes are no longer countable using my fingers. I really need some pampering for my poor skin!

Thanks to the nice folks from Hebeloft, I had an opportunity to try out Soosul - skincare products made in Korea. The key component of this brand is sang-hwang mushrooms (Phellinus Linteus) which is said to be able to inhibit cancer.

Soosul Eye Cream

The intensive eye cream contains 10% of Sang-hwang mushroom extract, together with various natural Korean medicinal herbs and vitamins, it is said to prevent the formation of fine wrinkles, and provides moisturising and anti-wrinkle effect.

I can feel the richness of the cream when I apply near my eyes, yet it is absorbed into the skin so quickly that I don't feel it is sticky or oily.

Soosul Whitening Sleeping Pack

It is the perfect type of mask for a lazy person like me! Just apply 30 minutes before I go to bed, and I can wash it off in the next morning! It is said to suppress melanin formation and prevent hyper-pigmentation while nourishing and hydrating skin. Like the eye cream, it is rich and yet it does not make me feel sticky as it is absorbed by the skin quickly.

Soosul Peeling Gel

Once the peeling gel comes into contact with water, it forms gentle scrubbing substance and clean my face thoroughly. I am glad that it does not cause much irritation to my sensitive skin.

There are other skincare products carried by Hebeloft, do check out their website: http://www.hebeloft.com

Surviving the First Two Days of Primary School for the Mum

$
0

On 1 January 2015 (Thursday), I suffered from insomnia. Because Pei Pei would be going to Primary School on the next day! I thought I was more excited than Pei Pei, who was already sound asleep at 9+ p.m.

School bag, checked. School uniform, checked. Socks and shoes, checked. Story book for silent reading, checked. Pencil box, checked. Tissue paper (not for me to dry my tears), checked.

But somehow, I felt that I missed something. What did I miss?

At 3 a.m., I jumped out of the bed. Because I finally realised what I missed - pocket money! And yes, this was my first time giving out pocket money to my child.

Together with DaDi, we attended the first day of school together with Pei Pei. We had some bonding activities organised by the school. After that, we followed her to the student care centre, she stayed there for a few hours to get familiarised with the environment and routine.

On 4 January 2015 (Sunday), I suffered from insomnia again! Because Pei Pei would be in school all by herself on the next day!

I was super worried, and kept thinking...
  1. Does she know where the morning assembly area is?
  2. Does she know where the toilets are?
  3. Would she get lost in school?
  4. Would she lose her belongings?
  5. Would she spend all her pocket money on the sweet drink at the canteen?
  6. Does she know how to count money and get the change when she buys things?
  7. Are the buns or sandwiches that I prepared enough for her during recess?
  8. Does she know the location where the student care centre student fetches her after school hours?
  9. Do her classmates' mummies make bento / lunch boxes for them? Would she be upset that I only made sandwiches for her? (I can't wake up at 5 a.m. to cook!)
  10. Would she be bullied by the other children in the school?

At the school gate, I attempted gate crashing, but it failed, as I was stopped by the security guard. I reminded Pei Pei, "If you don't know where the assembly area is, ask!"

I was thankful that a school staff happened to walk past us, and offered to guide her to the assembly area. The nervous me stood outside the gate, kept looking at her. The security guard smiled and said, "Don't worry. He is the Vice-principal!"

At school dismissal time, I was having a meeting at work. I kept worrying about whether she reached the student care centre safely. As I was about to walk out of the meeting room to make a call to the student centre, DaDi had already called and reported that Pei Pei landed safely!

When I fetched her from student care centre after work, she was very happy and kept telling me what happened in school. I felt so relieved that everything went smoothly. All my worries seemed to be unnecessary!

I survived the first two Primary School days! Finally I had a good night sleep!

Building Simple Rube Goldberg Machine with Children - Chain Reaction Experiment

$
0
0
Rube Goldberg machine? Sound complicated? Yes, we usually like to make things easy or do things in an easy manner, however, Rube Goldberg machine performs a simple task in a complicated way, usually via chain reaction.

So what are my objectives of building Rube Goldberg machine with the children?
  • To understand cause and effect
  • To develop problem solving skill
  • To exercise creativity
  • To build perseverance

Do we need to spend money on the set up? Absolutely not! We just made use of whatever we have at home!

First, we set a task to be performed. This time, we wanted to make the LEGO flowers fly! You must be laughing out loud on this goal, but the children were serious about this.

Since it is our first time building Rube Goldberg machine, we used only three simple concepts.

1. Toilet paper rolls tunnel
Each toilet paper roll sticks to the magnetic door (our storeroom door) using a piece of magnet. The children learn about magnetic attraction while building the tunnel.

When the children released a LEGO figurine from the top of the tunnel, they realised that they need to align the toilet paper rolls, so that the figurine would not get stuck between the toilet paper rolls.

They also observed that the figurine, though it was dropped from rest, it "flew" out at a high speed. When the children are older, we can explain to them that gravitational potential energy of the figurine is converted into kinetic energy.

2. CD case dominoes
When the LEGO figurine exited the toilet paper rolls tunnel, the children noticed that it may or may not hit the first CD case, so they had to observe where the figurine exited and then to adjust the position of the first CD.

As they were placing the CD cases, they had to take extra care so that the cases would not fall and hit the others.

3. Plastic spoon lever
In order to make the LEGO flower fly, the children had to consider how to orientate the plastic spoon so that the last CD case would fall on it.

Throughout the whole experiment, the children learnt that they had to build each part step-by-step to make sure that each part of the set-up worked. Patience and Perseverance are the keys to the success, as it took them a lot of trial-and-errors to make the LEGO flower jump.

They were overjoyed when their experiment was finally successful!

Malaysian Food Delights at PappaRich Plus (One KM)

[Sponsored Review]

To teach children about heritage, one way is to introduce them to the food. Recently the children visited Malaysia, however during our short stay of one day, we did not manage to bring them to try the authentic Malaysian street food. But we are thankful that we can still find great Malaysian food back in our home.

With a humble beginning in Malaysia, PappaRich, a restaurant chain, which aims to bring a truly Malaysian dining experience, is now expanding into the international market, including Singapore. PappaRich offers all-time favourite Malaysian street dishes like Nasi Lemak and Curry Laksa. To offer communal dining dishes that are perfect for sharing over the dining table, PappaRich Plus was launched at Plaza Singapura and One KM.

PappaRich Plus outlet at One KM is spacious and comfortable, it is suitable for gathering with family and friends.

After writing down our order on the order sheet, we pressed the bell and the waitress attended to us shortly. I like this idea, because my children would start shouting / screaming "excuse me" if no waiter attends to us after we have waved for 5 seconds.

The moment Pappa Hainan Steamed Bread with Butter and Kaya was served, it disappeared within a few seconds! The children loved the soft and fluffy bread so much that I could only steal a bite from them!

Pappa Hainan Steamed Bread with Butter and Kaya (S$3.90)

The key to success in a fried rice dish is the "wok hei", and this was observed in their Kampung Fried Rice. This Malay style fried rice may look ordinary, but once we had a bite, we could not stop!

Kampung Fried Rice (S$10.90)

Pei Pei had a craving for Nasi Lemak recently and no doubt her favourite dish of the day was Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken Drumstick. We love the crispiness of the skin and the succulent chicken meat.

Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken Drumstick (S$11.90)

Curry Fish Fillet brought us through an gastronomic adventure of spices - 22 different spices including kunyit, buah keras (candlenut) and biji halba (fenugreek seed) are used in the curry paste. It would be perfect to have a bowl of rice to go with this curry paste. We like the red snapper fillet for its freshness and sweetness. If you prefer fish head, you may choose to order their Curry Fish Head (S$34.90).

Curry Fish Fillet (S$23.90)

Ayam Masak Merah is a Malay dish with Hainanese influence. The chicken thigh meat is tender and the skin is crispy. A little sambal is added to enhance the dimension of the tomatoes and chili paste.

Ayam Masak Merah (S$12.90)

The red sambal sauce of Sambal Aubergine looked "fierce" at the first sight. However, a not-really-spicy-food-eater like me did not need to call an fire engine to come to my rescue as the sauce is of the sweeter variety. The texture is interesting, it has a crunchy outer layer, yet it is soft and juicy inside.

Sambal Aubergine (S$9.90)

I could only find one piece of bone in the middle of Seasonal Catch with Superior Soy (Mackerel Fish). The other bones were fried until they were so crispy that we could swallow the bones together with the flesh. I love this dish as I don't need to pick out the bones for the children and for myself!

Seasonal Catch with Superior Soy (Mackerel Fish) (S$16.90)

Another dish suitable for the children is Brocoli with Shiitake Mushrooms. The mushrooms are big and juicy.

Brocoli with Shiitake Mushrooms (S$16.90)

The preparation of Iced  Black Gold Coffee is not as simple as I thought. The ground coffee powder from a mixture of Arabica beans is soaked overnight in ice, and as the ice slowly melts, it gradually draws out the coffee’s essence.

Iced  Black Gold Coffee (S$5.50)

My stomach was totally full after the feast, how I wish I could to have another serving of Red Bean Iced. Using homemade red bean paste, the beverage is smooth and is great for sweet tooth.

Red Bean Iced (S$4.50)

The soft stripes of cendol in Pappa Cendol, together with coconut milk, shaved ice and Gula Melaka from Malacca, is perfect to balance the sensation in our mouth after the hearty meal.

Pappa Cendol (S$3.90)

Thank you PappaRich for the Malaysian dining experience that is rich in flavour and tradition!

Watching A Night of Magic at Raffles with Children

$

[Media Invite]

"MaMi, close your eyes, we are going to perform... magic!" And when I opened my eyes, the children had changed into their school uniform.

Well, that is their so-called magic. When I told them that we were going to watch A Night of Magic at Raffles, they were very excited, perhaps they were thinking whether the Magic Master Joe Labero could change his clothes faster than they do!

Even though I have watched many magic performances on television, it was my very first time watching a live staged performance! What would the four-time Merlin Award Winner present to us?

How I wish I could learn from Mr Labero to change clothes in split seconds! It would be useful for our mad rush in the morning! When he smashed the audience's handphone, I was amazed when it was then found in a metal box hung from the ceiling! His guest performers and fire artistes also did a fantastic job to bring the performance to a greater height. The children were thrilled to catch some of the poker cards that Mr Labero threw at the end of the performance!

With a sense of humour as well as good interaction between the magician and the audience, I would say that the performance is nice as a family outing. The cigar used by the performer at the end of the show could serve as a teachable moment for the children.

Tips for bringing children to magic show:

  1. Before the performance, show them some video clips of magic shows, so that they can expect what they may see at the performance.
  2. Take the booster seats from the side of the theatre, so that the children can watch the performance without being blocked by the audience in front of them.
  3. The music is quite loud, so remind them to cover their ears if they are not comfortable.
  4. Some children may be scared, hold their hands during the show and assure them that it is a performance.

Year 2015 marks a new phase of my parenting journey, as my firstborn embarks on her formal education journey. To make Year 2015 a better year for myself and my family, these are 5 things that I will do differently.

1. Learn to cook healthy meals for family
Last year, I was very keen to learn how to make dessert, and bought an oven to pick up baking. This year, I shall learn to cook more healthy meals for my family.

2. Bring my children for outdoor activities more often
I used to be an outdoor person. Somehow, as I grow older, I become allergic to the sun and I didn't bring my children for outdoor activities often. I shall bring them for outdoor activities more often. Swimming would be one of the outdoor activities in our list. However, I can't teach them how to swim since I am a human submarine, so I shall look for a coach soon. Any recommendations?

3. Unplug when my children are with me
I had a tendency to take a look at my phone, and started replying messages or emails in front of my children. I shall put away my phone when they are around. So if you need to contact me super urgently, give me a call ok?

4. Manage my emotion
Oh yes, I still remember the Orange Rhino challenge which I attempted in 2013. And it was not really successful as I still raise my voice at my children sometimes. I shall continue to manage my emotion and not to flare up at them easily.

5. Let it go
The children are going to be 6 and 7 years old, they are no longer babies whom I have to hold their hands tightly. I used to shout "Beware of the bicycle!" even when the cyclist was 1 km away,  I shall let go and allow them to be more independent.

I Believe I Can Fly @ iFly Singapore

[Sponsored Review + Giveaway]

It was boarding time.

I checked-in without any luggage. I was going to experience something that I had never experienced before.

I was going to... FLY!

Whether it rains or shines, you can still experience flying in Singapore! Yes, you can experience indoor skydiving at iFly Singapore, located at Sentosa!

One hour before the scheduled flight, we had to be there for training and gearing up. Our friendly instructor invited us to go forward in pairs to practise the posture. This reminds me of my children's tummy time when they were still babies!

Next, we geared up ourselves. Lockers are available to keep your belongings (additional fee applies).

Suit, checked. Goggles, checked. Ear plugs, checked. Helmet, checked. And I also checked how the bottom of the wind tunnel looked like. Don't worry, the fans are located on the top, not at the bottom, so you won't be chopped if you can't fly up!

The group of flyers went into the Flight Chamber, and each of us had two skydives. The time for each indoor skydive is the time taken for a real skydiver to fall from 12000 feet to 3000 feet!

I was amazed by the courage of the group of children! They were so brave and none of them chickened out when we went into the Flight Chamber. It was a pity that my children couldn't join me this time as they are still under the minimum age requirement of 7.

Finally it was my turn. The wind was very strong inside but I couldn't fly high. Am I too heavy? I think it is more likely because I was too tensed up!

Thank you iFly Singapore for the unique experience!

Tips when you are going for your iFly experience:
  • Dress in comfortable clothing. Ladies, do not wear skirt or dress!
  • Wear socks and shoes with laces e.g. sport shoes or sneakers.
  • Leave your accessories e.g. wedding band, earrings at home.
  • Try to relax during the flight. (That is a reminder for myself)
  • Smile, even if you can't relax like me. Because photos and video are taken (additional fee applies for purchase of photos and videos).

Chinese New Year Craft - Ang Bao Sheep / Goat

$

"MaMi, we haven't decorated our house for Chinese New Year!" said Pei Pei.

Oh yes, it is another 9 days to Chinese New Year, and we have been so busy that we have not decorated our house yet.

Since this year is the year of sheep / goat (can someone enlighten me is it sheep or goat?), our first Chinese New Year decorative craft is of course making sheep!

It is so simple that we completed within a few minutes!

Materials:
Ang bao (red packets)
Beige colour paper
Scissors
Glue stick
Black marker

Method:

Step 1:
Cut the red packet, using only the front side.

Step 2:
Fold the top of red packet downwards. If it is a straight edge, cut curvy shape. Cut away the two corners at the bottom.

Step 3:
From the beige paper, cut the sheep's face and ears. From the remaining red packet paper, cut two rectangles / trapeziums for the legs.

Step 4:
Use glue stick to attach the face, ears and legs to the red packet paper. Use marker to draw the face.

That is how a sheep become a goat!

Wish you  三"羊"開泰!! Have a prosperous Chinese New Year!

Begonia Road Playground - Swings, See-saw and Merry-go-round

During Chinese New Year, we visited our relatives at Yio Chu Kang Road area, where we chanced upon a hidden gem in the quiet neighbourhood - Begonia Road Playground.

At Begonia Road Playground, the children were overjoyed to see these - swings, see-saw and Merry-go-round!

While those are not the old-school type of swing, see-saw and Merry-go-round, the children and even myself enjoyed this playground because we hardly see all these exist within one playground (please let us know if there are other such playgrounds).

This playground is not really accessible unless you drive. If you are taking bus, you would have to walk a short distance after alighting.

Oh, I'm talking about playing the MONOPOLY game - one of my favourite board games. It is a great family bonding activity.

We are thrilled to receive MONOPOLY 80th ANNIVERSARY Edition from Hasbro Singapore. What? MONOPOLY is 80 years old!  I simply love the vintage inspired game board, cards, and tokens which are iconic to each MONOPOLY decade!

From 4 to 10 March 2015, all cities big and small will have the chance to compete for two spaces on the MONOPOLY HERE & NOW game boards during “Wild Card Week.” Fans can “write-in” additional locations not included in the initial list of destinations and the cities with the most submissions during this week will be featured as the two brown property spaces in the new game.

Homemade Hong Kong Egglets / Egg Waffle (雞蛋仔) Recipe

$

Hong Kong egglets (egg waffle) 雞蛋仔 is one of my favourite childhood snacks.

When I visited Hong Kong 2 years ago, I bought a 雞蛋仔 pan (HKD140) to make the delicious snack at home, so that Pei Pei and Hao Hao can share the joy of my childhood.

I was so excited to make egglets at home! However, after I tried once, the metal pan was sent to the "cold storage". The reason? As I was not skillful and was not well-prepared, when I flipped the pan, the batter flew all over the place, and I took long long time to clean up the stove.

Recently, I heard about an electric egg waffle maker and bought it at S$39 without much hesitation. Oh, I was so thrilled to make egglets without creating a big mess!

The children helped in preparing the batter, and I would be the chef operator using the maker, as it is too dangerous for the children to handle the hot equipment.

The children enjoyed eating so much that I only managed to "steal" a few to taste.

Recipe adapted from I Love Cake

Ingredients:
140 g all-purpose flour
7.5 g baking powder
28 g corn flour (or tapioca starch)
2 eggs
28 g vegetable oil
140 g sugar
28 g milk (or evaporated milk)
140 g water

Method:
  1. In the first bowl, sift the all-purpose flour, baking powder and corn flour.
  2. In the second bowl, add eggs and sugar, mix well. Add milk and water, mix until foams are observed.
  3. Add the egg mixture into the flour mixture, add a small portion at a time. Mix well.
  4. Add vegetable oil. Mix well.
  5. Pour the batter into a big measuring cup so that it is easier to pour into the egg waffle maker. Place in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  6. Pre-heat the egg waffle maker. Coat the maker with a thin layer of vegetable oil.
  7. Pour the batter evenly into the lower plate of the egg waffle maker. Close the cover, wait for 10 seconds, turn the maker.
  8. Cook for about 3 minutes for the first piece of egglets. Subsequently, the cooking time can be reduced to about 2.5 minutes.

Making Takoyaki using Egg Waffle Maker

$
0
0
We made our homemade Hong Kong egglets (雞蛋仔)with our egg waffle maker. You may wonder, what else can be made using this maker?

Our suggestion - making Takoyaki!

The children are not very keen in octopus, so we used ham and cheese instead. We also omitted the mayonnaise and takoyaki sauce as they are beyond my budget.

Our so-called takoyaki did not look like the usual takoyaki - ours was one whole piece of balls joining together! Nevertheless, it was delicious!

Adapted from Little Japanese Mama

Ingredients:

1 cup plain flour
1 1/2 tablespoon corn flour
2 eggs
2 cups water
1 teaspoon chicken stock
3 slices ham
2 slices cheese
Dried bonito flakes

Method:
  1. Sift flour into a big mixing bowl. Add corn flour.
  2. Add eggs, chicken stock and water. Mix well.
  3. Pour the batter into a big measuring cup so that it is easier to pour into the egg waffle maker. Place in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  4. Cut the ham and cheese into small pieces, add to the batter.
  5. Pre-heat the egg waffle maker. Coat the maker with a thin layer of vegetable oil.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the lower plate of the egg waffle maker. Close the cover, wait for 10 seconds, turn the maker.
  7. Cook for about 3 minutes for the first piece. Subsequently, the cooking time can be reduced to about 2.5 minutes.
